All NewsTournamentsTynemouth success at the Nationals

February 26, 20150

SP_4265The British National Championships were held this month at the National Squash Centre in Manchester, with a healthy and successful Tynemouth representation traveling down to compete and support.
In the Ladies event, newly crowned Northumbria Closed Champion Lucy Beecroft made it through two qualifying rounds to make into the main draw for the first time.  In the first round, Lucy had the unenviable task of being drawn against defending champion and #2 seed Alison Waters, where she lost 11/4, 11/1, 11/3.
SP_4263Sam Ward also played in the qualifying round, unfortunately losing to Cheshire‘s Rachel Chadwick in the second qualifying round.
In the Masters draws, the Mens O55 event had Jon Evans seeded #2 and looking to go all the way to the final after having to pull out last year due to injury.  This he did with victories over Eric Southern, Ged Martin and former world #4 Gawain Briars in the semi-final.
Jon played Dermot Hurford [3/4] in the final winning in 49 minutes 5/9, 9/3, 9/7, 9/7 to become the National O55 Champion for the first time. Congratulations Jon!
The Mens O60 event had Steve Cubbins and Colin McNestrie in different halves of the draw. Steve (who only turned 60 the weekend before) took out Paul Vale and Michael Tidy [9/16] before running into Steve Jackson [5/8] who went on to lose to the eventual winner in the semis.  Colin was taken out in the first round by Nick Drysdale [3/4] but went onto win the O60 plate by defeating Clive Turner, Rob Lathbury and Clive Harrison.
The Ladies O50 event had Louise Robertson making her debut in the competition. After her first round opponent pulled out Louise played Sarah Howlett [3/4] losing in three competitive games.
Congratulations to all who proudly represented Tynemouth in Manchester, and thanks to those who traveled down, the support is very much appreciated.

Thanks to Colin for the write-up & Steve for the images.
