Full report to follow, but here’s a quick roundup of last weekend’s Northumbria County Closed at Tynemouth, and some key links …
Barnett retains, Ward regains
Finals night was packed to the rafters as David Barnett, appearing in his 14th consecutive final, won the title for an 11th time with a 3-1 win over Liam Gutcher.
The women’s final was an all-Tynemouth affair in which Sam Ward won her third county title, beating first-time finalist Hannah Cliff in straight games.
Further Tynemouth success came as Glenn Ward retained his O45 title with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Russell Hunter and Dawn Ward (are you beginning to see a pattern here?) beat Louise Robertson to claim the Women’s O40 title. Stuart Varrall marked his first County Closed by winning the D event (you get promoted next time, Stuart!)
Dan Ward won the A plate, and Sam and Dan Ward were runners-up in the doubles, losing out 11-9, 10-11, 10-11 despite having match ball in each of the final two games !
Big thanks to Eric Mok and his band of helpers, and to all the competitiors and supporters.
