All NewsTournamentsTynemouth take a County Closed Triple

January 15, 20120

It was a good day for Tynemouth on finals day of the 2012 Northumbria County Closed at Northern.
Steve Cubbins set the bandwagon rolling with a clinical victory in the the C final, regaining a title he first won some 15 years ago. Meanwhile on the adjacent court Simon Ho was winning the C plate with a 3/1 over some hapless victim.
The B final was an all-junior affair, and Jamie Todd rubber-banded his way to the title with an impressive display of shotmaking and retrieving, as we’ve come to expect of him.
A fourth gong was definitely coming Tynemouth’s way as Sam Ward took to court to defend her Women’s title against Lucy Beecroft, and this one went all the way with Sam taking it 11/9 in the fifth, but it surely won’t be long before Lucy gets her name on the cup.
The A plate was an entertaining prelude to the main final, Glen Ward losing out 3/1 to National Deaf champion Phil Thomas to complete Tynemouth’s haul of six podium finishes.
In the men’s A final eight-time champion David Barnett came from two-nil down – and 6-2 down in the fourth – to deny Paul Lord again (although if CHB Wilson hadn’t been out with a self-inflicted injury clearly it would have been a Tynemouth clean sweep).
